Squarespace: File Download on Email Opt-In

So you’ve decided to give away an eBook or important document to your email list subscribers but aren’t quite sure how to do it. It’s not that difficult at all. There are actually 3 methods to accomplish this.

  1. Set up MailChimp to send an automatic email to subscribers (requires modifying the Welcome email, or going with a paid subscription plan on Mailchimp)
  2. Set up a landing page for the giveaway, and then redirect people here after an opt-in.
  3. Give people access to the file IMMEDIATELY after they opt-in.

For methods 2 and 3, here are the instructions.

  1. Insert a FORM block onto any page, ideally, you should ask for just email, but you can also ask for visitors to provide first/last name.
  2. Go to the ADVANCED section of the form.

If you would like people to be redirected to a different page (the landing page for your file), in the section for POST-SUBMIT HTML, insert the following code.

<meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0; url=http://URL-TO-PAGE.com" />

In the above code, the number after “content=” is how long the page waits to refresh in seconds. I used a wait period of 0 seconds but you can set something like 5 instead if you want the page to wait 5 seconds before redirecting them.

If you would like people to be able to download the file right away, enter your text (ex. “Download Now”) as the text in POST-SUBMIT MESSAGE and then highlight the text and make it a link to a file as shown below.

That’s it! Enjoy!
